TEAM VAN DE VELDE
DOESN'T CHOKE UNDER PRESSURE
This year's Sports Trivia
was one for the ages. All of the teams took a sports knowledge test to
determine their seeding in the bracket. The three brackets were a challenge
for each team. Team Van de Velde won the Big Head Bracket, The Winning Team
won the Big Mouth Bracket and Acid Reflux emerged from the Loss of Hair
Bracket. The three teams faced off in Championship Jeopardy. Van de Velde
seemed to be a bottom feeder after the Jeopardy round with a total of 700
points while Acid Reflux and the Winning Team were tied at 2000. The Final
Jeopardy question was sure to determine the winner. All of the teams wagered
it all as the final category of NFL MVPs was revealed. Both Acid Reflux and
The Winning Team were unable to remember who the last defensive player was
to win the NFL MVP, but Van de Velde was. Of course it was the beast that
was Lawrence Taylor. Congratulations to team Van de Velde.

CAPTAIN'S GUIDE REMINDERS
Team captains and participants
should frequently review the
team captain's guide
for all eligibility rules and regulations that govern Intramural play.
So far this semester, Intramural Sports has had to forfeit multiple teams
for the use of ineligible players. The most frequent being for players
participating on multiple teams in the same sport (without a proper team
change procedure being followed) or players not currently enrolled in
classes who have participated. If you have any questions on your
eligibility, or on those of a team you are captain for, please check with
the Intramural Sports Office prior to allowing them to participate.
Ignorance is not an excuse, and there is no flexibility in our application
of the captain's guide policies.

WAY TOGO
The summer of disappointment continued
for France, as they chalked up their second soccer title match loss in
as many weeks. Togo, the tiny African nation represented by a gritty
Intramural Coed Soccer team took down the 2006 IM Cup by defeating
France, 7-5. While France beat Togo 2-0 in the FIFA world cup several
weeks ago, this game would play out differently. There were no
head-butts in this one, as Togo withstood a furious late rally by
France to hold on to a 5-1 halftime lead and close things out late in
the second half. Jaime Planells won the Golden Boot award with his 5
goal performance, including the clincher past French goalkeeper Ernest
Lance in the 34th minute. Adham Rashwan chimed in with two more goals
for Togo on the night. France advanced to the final earlier in the
night with a 1-0 win over India, and Togo got by Zimbabwe 6-3 in the
other semifinal.

Due to IMPGA Rules, the 2006 Spring Golf Tournament ended in a dead
heat, as Hometown Squared and Bearing Point both shot a 67 at Winter
Springs Golf Course. In the closest event in years, 4 teams finished
just one shot off the lead, with over a dozen other teams within 5
strokes of the title. Conditions were ripe for Chase Bernstein and
Jonathan Bukowski, as well as Jeff Glase and A.J. Krause. But they
weren't the only winners, as Jason Niad took home the longest to the
drive competition and Matthew Marraffino was closest to the pin.

Brown had distance, and Todd Saucedo was the most mobile. Wells came
in second in all of the preliminary events, but blew out the rest of

fame? They are the only team in UCF Intramural History to win a Bocce
Ball championship. The First Ever "Dion Wade" Bocce Ball Tournament
took place recently, with Kappa Sigma winning 11-5 over UCF Magic in
the title game. Circle Jerks and "Curling is Better" made it to the

UCF AT THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
UCF was represented at the national flag football
tournament this year by three teams and two officials. Kappa Delta found
themselves shorthanded due to illness of some players and still managed to
hang close for two games, but went down in both. They still were able to
score 3 touchdowns with only 5 players but fell to two top teams. UCF's Co-Rec
team was brand new to the tournament after last year's national championship
team did not return to the event. After falling in pool play by one
touchdown, they lost in the first round of the playoffs to Tarleton State
University, the eventual national champion. In the Men's Division, the
Showstoppers had a tough first round game as they took on past national
champion Southern University. In a back and forth game, the Showstoppers
lost by only 6 points in the last minute of the game. They took out their
frustration on Murray State in their next game, winning by over 50 points.
In the first round of the playoffs the Showstoppers knocked off C-USA rival
UAB, but unfortunately their run ended in the second round after losing to
North Texas. Josh Weaver, defensive specialist, was named a second team
all american on defense!
As for the officials, Intramural Supervisors Michael Boman and Marissa
Dienstag worked at the tournament and both did a great job. Boman officiated
the Men's Open Division Semi-Final game and Dienstag officiated the Men's
Collegiate Semi-final game, and was on the crew for the Men's Championship
game. Marissa was also named one of the top 20 officials at the tournament,
earning all-american honors and becoming the 6th all-american official at
UCF since 2001 and first female all-american official at UCF.

by ADPi's 4th consecutive trophy win, as they topped Alpha Xi Delta by 55
points.

line to win that event.
Out of 35 Table Tennis competitors, Tih Koon Tan was the master with the
paddle as he won the title game by taking 2 out of 3 versus Nazim Ashraf,
11-15, 15-8, 15-13.
Matt Prater, Aaron Horne, and Steven Moffet look out! We have some punt,
pass, and kick winners who showed off their cannon arms and legs at the
annual event. John Boyle punted his way with a 54 yard spiral to victory in
that event. Michael LaManna launched a Culpepper-esque bomb 64 yards to edge
Cody Hendrix in the pass competition. Cory Lambert showed worthy of kickoff
duties for UCF with a 60 yard blast, but the overall winner of the night was
Brandon Noel. Brandon didnt win any individual event, but his consistency
paid off big.
Finally, there's a new dodgeball king at UCF. Nick Grande fought off tons of
balls being thrown at him to be crowned the 2005 Dodgeball Eliminator
champion. Congrats to all!

refused to lose. Their toughest match-up of the night came in the
Semi-Final Game 5 of a best of 5 series verses Lambda Chi. Just as time
expired in Game 5, and only Beniah Hildenbrand of Sigma Chi and Jeff Straub of
Lambda Chi remaining, both were hit simultaneously forcing a sudden death
playoff! The action continued for the next five minutes with both
players huffing and puffing trying to get the game over. Finally,

FLOOR HOCKEY
FINALS DON'T DISAPPOINT
Gary Bettman
had better thank the six teams who participated in the Intramural Floor
Hockey finals on Thursday night for keeping the sport of hockey alive and
well. All three games were Instant Classics, as ADPi, ATO, and the Usual
Suspects all were victorious in thrilling fashion.
In the first game of the night, ADPi was fresh off a softball championship
when they stepped into the rink to take on Dam Beavers. The Beavers would
strike first in the 2nd period, but ADPi answered right back to tie the game
at 1-1. After regulation wasn't enough to decide it, the game went into
overtime. Dam Beavers felt sudden death as Christine Berry assisted and Lori
Correnti put the biscuit in the basket to win the game 2-1 in thrilling OT
fashion.
The best game of the night was the Rec Final, as ATO looked to avoid losing
two championships in one day after falling in the softball finals only a few
hours earlier to Kirks Jerks. Their opponent, Pooper, looked to be the
better team early in the game as they scored two quick goals on ATO to take
a 2-0 first period lead. Pooper would keep the pressure on as they went up
3-0 going into the final period on the strength of a hat trick by Alec
Miller. ATO got some life as they got on board early in the 3rd period, as
the momentum started to shift their way. A furious rally late in the 3rd saw
ATO's Brian Rojas and Richard Hyland score to even the game up at 4-4. It
looked as though the game would head into overtime, but Pooper scored with
under a minute left to take a 5-4 lead. Miraculously, after a violation ATO
got posession of the puck and scored with 10 seconds left in regulation to
tie the game once again and send it to overtime. In the bonus session, ATO's
Brian Rojas took a blue line slap shot that snuck past goalie Daniel Hansen
that ended the game at 6-5.
In the Competitive final, the Usual
Suspects returned to defend the title they won in 2004 as the Scandinavian
Penetrators. The Suspects came into the game undefeated, after easily
handling each of their opponents this season. Lambda Chi would not be
intimidated, as they were clearly the class of the Fraternity Gold league
this season. After the first period, it looked as though a rout was on as
the Swedish Tandem of Johan Westin and Linus Luoisinen put Usual Suspects up
3-1. Lambda Chi was down 4-1 before furiously fighting back on the strength
of the offense of Asher Blumenthal and Logan Berkowitz to take a 5-4 lead in
the 3rd period. The defending champs would knot the game back up at 5 after
sneaking a goal past Emerson Lotzia, and after a costly unsportsmanlike
conduct penalty by Travis Ligon, Lambda Chi would have to play shorthanded
for the rest of the game. The power play lead to 3 more goals for Usual
Suspects, as they finished off Lambda chi 8-6.
SOFTBALL DRAMA
The 2005 Softball Season ended with a bang, as four teams won championships
on a magnificent thursday afternoon. In the Women's final, Alpha Delta Pi
won their 3rd straight title by holding off Alpha Xi, 18-12. ADPi had lead
by as many as 15 runs before Alpha Xi began their comeback, but it would not
be enough to overcome ADPi's huge lead. In the Rec "A" final, ATO lead
Kirk's Jerks 9-4 before the Jerks stepped on the gas and plated 12 runs in
the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 16-9 lead. Donnie Barnes' 2 run
homerun over the right field fence was the key to the comeback, and Kirk's
Jerks held ATO scoreless in the 7th to win by the 16-9 final. In Coed, the
Wood Wackers are the new champions as they jumped out early on some erratic
pitching by the Mighty Ducks and never looked back with a 12-2 victory.
Finally, in the Recreation "B" game, Sigma Chi started fast against DTD and
never let up winning 13-2. Congratulation to all the Kings and Queens of the
Diamond.

to victory. In the final game, Circle Jerks defeated Blazing Nuggets 6-3 in
what Nelson Santiago called one of the two greatest IWP finals that he had
ever seen here at UCF. Congratulations to the best Innertube Water Jockeys
in Orlando!
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP KEY TO SUCCESS
Good Sport....
Bad Sport. Which one are you? Please take some time to read our
photo essay on why exhibiting proper sportsmanship
is not only expected, but demanded in Intramural Sports and will lead to
more enjoyable and successful experience for you.
ULTIMATE WINNERS
13 teams
threw frisbees to each other, but one team did it better than anyone at the
annual IM Sports Frisbee Tournament. Da Lord has Spoken defeated The
Pwnerers 10-6 in the Championship game, a thrilling final between two of the
top teams. Congratulations to all teams who participated!
BOWLING FOR
T-SHIRTS
This past Friday forty-five teams competed to see who
the best bowlers are at UCF. The champions from the Fall, led by Thomas
Eaton and Jason Gross, were back in the title
hunt again but fell short and took second place. The team DU 1
Tyme, consisting of Michael Ferrari, Brandon
Thomas, Dane Windsor, and William Stevenson took the championship with a
series pin fall of 2218. Individual champions were Jennifer Stamp who
bowled a 160, and Michael Cheatam bowled a 278.
MORE CHAMPS
Sigma Chi repeats as Dodgeball Champs and
Criminals, Twisted Canes, and
Sparta all win soccer.
CHAMPS
Congrats to the Ram Squad, Old School, and
Git it Girlz for
their 3 on 3 Basketball titles and Ball Smackers, Rams, Ace it, and Arnold's
FUPA for their Volleyball titles last week. More Information provided on the
sport page.
IM SPORTS' TOP PASSER
Take the legs of Fran Tarkenton, the arm
strength of Vinny
Testaverde, and the accuracy of Troy Aikman
and what do you have? Right now, you'd have a really old quarterback. But in
their primes, you would have the ideal passer.
Thats what it took to win the first ever
IM Sports Quarterback Challenge competition this past Saturday, and Ron
Eubanks edged Anthony Albamonte on the final
throw to take the title. Participants where judged on distance, accuracy,
speed, and mobility.
LAMBDA CHI TAKES WIFFLEBALL
Lambda Chi did it like this, they did it like that, they
did it with a wiffleball bat. Sigma Chi looked
good as gold through much of the tournament, as they were undefeated in the
winner’s bracket and advanced to the championship game. Lambda Chi took the
long road and lost to Sigma Chi in the semi final in the winner’s bracket.
Lambda Chi then advanced through the loser’s bracket and cleared the way
into the championship to avenge their loss in the winner’s bracket. Sigma
Chi, only having to win one game, could not muster up enough power to
overcome the big hitters of Lambda Chi. Lambda Chi won back-to-back games
in the championship series to take the title, finishing with a 7-1
tournament record.
IM OFFICIAL WORKS IN D-1
UCF Intramural Official and Supervisor Steve Anderson worked his first NCAA
Division I Basketball game over the winter break. Steve worked the first
round game of the UCF holiday tournament between Fordham and
Charleston Southern at the UCF
Arena. Former UCF official Eric Peterson worked the championship game of the
same tournament, between
Charleston Southern and Brown.
Steve and Eric are two of the six current or former UCF students who work
NCAA Division I basketball.
SIGMA CHI
STUMPS PTP'ERS
2004 was a big year for Sigma Chi. They won a kickball title, they got to
keep the Greek points trophy for another year,
Destiny's Child got back together, and Sigma Chi Alum Drew
Brees was named NFL comeback player of the year.
Still, a loss to the Primetime Players in the 2004 Team Sports Trivia
competition has haunted team captain Matt Oberlender.
After a year of training and lots of TiVo'ing
sportscenter, Matt's team took on the human
sports Almanac, Victor Anderson, and squeeked
out a close victory on the final question to win the 2005 team title.
55 ELIMINATED, ONE
WINNER
In a field of 56 competitors, Brad Epstein came away as the first Intramural
Champion of 2005. "You have to be able to move quickly and make yourself as
small as possible," stated Brad Epstein referring to his training regiment
that included him spending 8 hours a day inside of a 2' by 3' box that only
had holes big enough for air. We wouldn't recommend such an extreme
training method, but it did help him to defeat competition that included
such big named throwers as Randy Johnson. If you were one of the 55
eliminated by the self-proclaimed "Human Gazelle" then don't forget to sign
up for the Dodgeball League which starts next
Friday.
UCF WINS
NATIONAL FLAG FOOTBALL TITLE!
Co-Rec Squad defeats Rice
in Semifinals and avenges last year's championship defeat by beating
Georgia Southern 9-6 in
the final game on Sunday in
New Orleans,
Louisiana. UCF Men's team "The
Franchise" goes 3-1 and makes it to the Sweet 16.
BENCH PRESS WINNERS
7 Winners flexed their muscles on December 1st,
winning their individual weight classes at the annual Intramural Bench Press
Competition. Among the winners and top lifts were Christina Anastario
(170lbs), Robert Bookbinder (260lbs), Edward Demas (275lbs), Brian Becker
(365lbs), Jordan Datchko (365lbs), Allen Gibson (370lbs), and Charles Telson
(365lbs).
BASEBALL FINALS
After the big BALCO scandal, who knew
that baseball could still be entertaining without the steroids? Both
baseball finals were slugfests as Curved Balls beat Maulers 8-3 in the
recreational finals and Pimp Juice beat Ballz Out 13-7 to take home the
competitive crown.
6 CHAMPS, 1 DAY
In one of the biggest championship days
in UCF Intramural Sports history, Three championships were played in both
flag football and basketball. Flag football had some old and new faces as
Showstoppers avenged last year's loss, and Nightmares broke through in 7 on
7 for the first time ever.
Basketball was filled with decisive wins and some clutch shooting as three
new champs were determined in that sport as well.
ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS FOR OFFICIAL
UCF official Doug Marcello earned a bid to
officiate at the National Flag Football Tournament in New Orleans after
being named as one of 4 all-tournament officials at the Western Kentucky
University "Battle of the Bluegrass" Regional Tournament in Bowling Green,
Kentucky. Doug worked the Co-rec Championship Game, while the other UCF
official, Vladimir Voyard-Tadal worked the women's semifinal. Doug will join
Jason Human at the ACIC National Tournament.
UCF WINS UWF REGIONAL TITLE
UCF's Co-Rec Flag Football team, the UCF Knights, went
undefeated this weekend in Pensacola to win the ACIC Regional Flag Football
tournament. The win gave them an automatic bid to the National Flag Football
tournament and helped them establish themselves as one of the favorites to
win the National Tournament. UCF went 2-0 in pool play, then beat the
two-time national champion team from UF 18-9 in the semi-finals. They faced
UL-Monroe in the title game and after trailing 16-10, scored the final two
times including James Panui's game saving INT return for a TD, to win 25-16.
Panui and Quarterback Mike Ruggieri were named to the first team
all-tournament squad, and Reneisha Brown-Lewis was named tournament MVP.
UCF's officials also fared well, as Intramural Supervisors Jason Human and
Michael Boman were selected to officiate the Men's Championship game between
FSU and Pensacola Junior College. Human was selected as one of the top four
officials at the tournament and received a bid to officiate at the National
Flag Football tournament, becoming the 9th UCF official in the last 4 years
to work the National Tournament.
MARQUIS TAKES PPK
Congratulations to Steve
Marquis, who won the annual Punt, Pass, and Kick competition. Marquis won
the kicking competition, while Brandon Noel had the top punt and Matt
Werksman had the best pass. Marquis had the top overall score, giving him
the victory.
MOORE WINS TABLE TOP FOOTBALL
Adrian Moore is the best paper football player
at UCF. And we think he plays a mean game of "pencil-break", but we wont
know that until we have that tournament. Adrian out-flicked 13 other
competitors last friday afternoon by winning the inauguaral event. Adrian
ran threw the round robin with no losses, and defeated long-time rival Dan
Franklin in the championship.
UCF TEAM REACHES SWAMP BOWL QUARTERFINALS
The Franchise enjoyed Ron Zook's last weekend as coach at the
University of Florida by going an impressive 3-1 in the Swamp Bowl Flag
Football tournament, finishing in a tie for 5th overall. The Franchise
knocked off UF's Pi Lam 27-8 and PBAC's Explosive 38-0 to reach the
elimination round. The Franchise then shut out UF's Half Depth 12-0 before
finally falling to Georgia Southern Pi Kappa Phi 25-13. UCF's Doug Marcello
also officiated the Women's championship game, won by Steven F. Austin.

REC FEST 2004 RESULTS
The F Bombers arrived just in
time on Friday night to capture the top prize for UCF's greatest (K)night of
play, narrowly holding off the 3 Musketeers to win the title. The F Bombers
Christy Almonte, Chris Frederick, and Steven De la Fe took home 6 passes to
Skyventure as the top prize. Nobody was left empty handed, as the 3
Musketeers each won $100 savings bonds from the UCF Federal Credit Union,
third place finisher 2 Franks and Jimmy took home free tickets to a Orlando
Predators Arena Football League game, and fourth place Dodgeball Exec won
free admission to Arabian Knights. All teams that participated in events
such as Melonball, Dizzybat Dodgeball, Reverse Kickball, Tug-of-war, and the
Pajama Relay won prizes from sponsors like Sky Coaster, Fun Spot, Ripley's
Believe it or Not, Stoneybrook, Wedgefield, Orlando Art Museum, the Orlando
Magic, Oviedo Bowling Center, Applebees, Smokey Bones, Fazolis, and TGI
Fridays.
COREC FLAG FOOTBALL RE-PEAT
Last year's national runner-up, Dix-n-Chix, will return to
the national tournament after romping through the hurricane-delayed
tournament.
Dix-n-Chix outscored their three opponents 144-0 in the two-day event. They
were lead by returning national All-American player James Panui and last
year's female national tournament MVP, Julie Hartley.
MONEY SHOT CRUISES TO GOLF TITLE
Patrick
Hoffman, Chad Schilsky, Chandler Petit, and Rich Zavada shot a blistering 59
to win the 4 Person Golf Scramble held at Twin Rivers Golf Club. That crew
snuck by the Purple Headed Yogurt Slingers who shot a 61 and finished in
second. Jacob Anders won the longest Drive and Chris Brown took the closest
to the pin.
VICTOR ADDS ANOTHER TITLE
A pesky group of challengers pushed him to the limit, but Victor
Anderson's knowledge of the NFL draft helped him fend off Shannon Sullivan,
Mike Rappaport, Matt Gary, and others to win the 2004 Individual Sports
Trivia title. Sullivan finished second in one of the closest battles in
recent history. Victor will attempt to defend his team title in the spring,
on the January 14th event. You have over 3 months to study!

SPRING 2004 |

SPRING SEMESTER COMES TO A
CLOSE WITH NEW CHAMPS
In the softball finals,
two reigning champs held onto their title, while two new teams snagged their
first championship.
Congrats to this years softball champs: Delta Upsilon (Rec B), Sigma Phi
Epsilon (Rec B), Alpha Delta Pi (Womens), Red Rockets (Co-ed).
In a night of nothing but
excitement, three teams emerged victorious last Thursday in front of a full
house at the Recreation and Wellness Center. Congrats to this years floor
hockey champs: Get Pucked Up (Mens Rec), Alpha Xi Delta (Womens), and
Scandinavian Penetrators (Mens Comp).
On April 2, 2004 forty-two
teams traveled to the Wedgefield Golf Course to participate in the 2 Person
Golf Scramble. To make things fair each team teed off from the white tees
and then got to play from their “best ball”. Standard golf course rules
applied, and after eighteen hole the team with the lowest score would take
home the first place title. There was also a Longest Drive and Closest to
the Pin competition, on the 9th and 16th holes
respectively. The winners, 8 Doggs and Money Shot, both came in at five
under par.
International Sports Day was a
hit! Eight teams with a total of thirty-one participants came out on April
3, 2004 for the event. Each four person team participated in two volleyball
games, two 10 minute soccer periods, as well as, badminton and table tennis
doubles. For the final event of the day teams were given a sheet of paper
with 12 different country’s flags printed on them. The teams then raced to
see who could finish first with the most correct answers. Alejandro DeLaine,
Peter Lyon, Joshua Newland, and Jacob O’Brien of team Futballin came out on
top.
Thirteen students came out on
April 9, 2004 to participate in the Hockey Skills Challenge tournament. The
participants had to compete in five events that measured their skill and
speed abilities. The events were: ten pucks from the center line
alternating goals, obstacle course, accuracy challenge with goal and two
trashcans, speed challenge, and ten pucks from the center line shooting at
two different goals at the same end of the court. Participants were
allotted points based on their finishing times or how many pucks they got
into the goals. Kristin Beckus won the women’s competition with a total of
33 points. Brandon Noel and Brian Torok tied for first in the men’s
competition, each with a total of 74 points.
2-ON-2 VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball season has wrapped
up with four new champs; (Women's Champs) Bahama Mama's, (Co-ed Champs)
Franchise,
(Rec Champs) Lamdba Chi Alpha II, and (Comp Champs) We're Huge.
IM SPORTS ROYAL RUMBLE RESULTS
Sixty-three wrestlers gathered on Tuesday,
April 6th to battle for supremacy as the top intramural wrestlers at UCF.

BRING ON SPORTS CENTER, IT'S
'PRIME TIME'
Who has scored the most power-play goals
in NHL history? What was the first year the Olympics were televised? I have
no clue, but these
guys definitely knew there stuff. Victor Anderson, Jeff Sharon, and Oscar
Diaz made up the reigning champs, the Prime Time Players, that outwitted
nine other teams to be named the Sports Trivia Champs. Prime Time Players
faced off with Sigma Chi’s, Matt Oberlender, Marc Ceigel, and Brian Peluso,
in the championships. The teams were asked 25 questions in the final round,
but that wasn’t enough for Sigma Chi as they fell short to the Prime Time
Players. Congrats to the Prime Time Players as they
keep their reigning era for their third Sports Trivia title.
A6...MISS, D1...YOU SANK MY
BATTLESHIP!
The name didn't suit the team
as You Sank My Battleship won IM's first innertube water polo tournament.
Six teams with 36 participants came out on the clear-sky-80-degree Saturday
weather to be the first crowned Innertube Water Polo Champs.
The pool play, no pun
intended, consisted of a 2-game match to seed each team into the playoffs.
The Seabiscuits went into the playoffs as the favorite being the only
undefeated team, but closely followed by #2 seeded R.O.U.S. R.O.U.S. had no
problem defending their #2 seed spot as they defeated Lambda Chi Alpha in
the 2nd round 7-4, sending them to the title game.
You Sank My Battleship won
their first round game to meet up with the Seabiscuits in the second round
to fight for the chance to compete in the championship game against R.O.U.S.
In what was probably the most intense fight for the finish, Battleship slid
past the Seabiscuits 10-9. With the evenly matched R.O.U.S. and Battleship
in the championship game, this looked to be even more intense than their
game against the Seabiscuits. However, with great defense by goalie,
Vladimir Voyard-Todal, combined with offensive efforts by tournament MVP
Adam Wides, Battleship sunk R.O.U.S.'s chances for a coveted IM Champ Shirt,
winning 7-5.
IM'S OWN OFFICIALS HONORED DURING SPRING BREAK
Intramural student officials Nelson Santiago and Steve
Anderson
traveled to regional tournaments during spring break and both earned bids to
officiate in national basketball tournaments. Santiago traveled to the
University of Kentucky for the Bluegrass Regional Basketball Tournament. 18
officials from schools such as Western Kentucky, Louisville, UCF, Ohio,
Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Ohio State worked games over the weekend.
Santiago officiated the women's championship game and was one of four
officials selected to advance to the national championships, which will take
place in Orlando in late April.
Steve Anderson traveled
to the University of Maryland for their regional basketball tournament.
Anderson was among 25 officials from Maryland, Northeastern, Ohio, George
Washington, UCF, Old Dominion, Howard, N.C. State, Cornell, and East
Carolina. Anderson was the top rated official and worked the women's
championship, and received one of two bids to officiate at the national
championships. Anderson became the first UCF student to ever
earn a bid to officiate in both the Flag Football and Basketball
national championships.
UCF'S RWC
SELECTED AS AN AWARD WINNER
The UCF
Recreation and Wellness Center has been selected as the National
Intramural-Recreation Sports Association Outstanding Sports Facilities Award
winner. Recognition of the award will be presented at the 2004 NIRSA Annual
Conference & Recreational Sports Expo in Albuquerque, NM on April 19th.
SIGMA CHI WINS KICKBALL
Sigma Chi outlasted 17 other teams on
Saturday to win the 2004 single elimination spring kickball tournament.
Sigma Chi slid past Team Ramrod 14-1 in the final game to take home
the easy win.
RACK
'EM UP, BILLIARDS CHAMPS HAVE BEEN NAMED
Friday afternoon 36 people
showed up for the Wackadoos Billiards Tournament in the UCF Student Union.
The recreational division comprised of 18 participants. Of those 18, 3 were
women, and 2 of them finished off the males and competed in the championship
game. Jessica Steffen and Ingrid Aguero battled out a best-of-five series of
9-ball pool. Ingrid held Jessica 3 games to 1, winning the recreation
title.
In the competitive division, Mushin
Kermelli met up with Yu-Jung Lui in the championship game outlasting 18
others. Yu-Jung came out on top giving up only 1 game to Mushin, and
winning 3, allowing him to claim the billiards competitive crown.
GOOOAALLL!!
Congratulations to Futballin, Pepitos
Burritos, and Twisted Cane for winning their respective divisions in the
7-on-7 Soccer Finals.
SWAMI LIFE WINS DODGEBALL
We don't know what 'Swami
Life' means, but apparently it has something to do with being good at
dodgeball. Swami Life took out defending champs, Kappa Sigma, in a 4-2
best-of-seven series thriller to take the title.
New
Half-Court Champs
Congratulations to the Latin Ballers, Sista’s
Wit Game and Point Gods for being crowned 3-on-3 basketball champs for the
spring. In the men’s recreation league title game, the key to the Latin
Ballers’ victory was their ability to work their inside-outside offense,
with Vladimir Voyard-Todal working the paint and Ray Acosta and Nelson
Santiago on the perimeter. Hangtime did all it could to shut down the
offense, but in the end it was too much Voyard-Todal.
In the women's title game, it was bombs away for Sista's Wit Game as Yjhonne
Hentley and Krystle Appleniz combined for eight two-pointers as they won
their second-straight title with relative ease against long-time rival Shut
’Em Down.
For the men’s competitive final, the No. 1-seeded Point Gods stormed through
the brackets as they met up with the Portland Tree Blazers in the title
game. However, the Blazers could not handle the potent offense that the Gods
brought to the table.
Tune into www.knightcast.org as announcer Victor Anderson gives the
play-by-play for the women’s title game at 3 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 24th and the
Rec title game will air at 5:30 p.m.
Volleyball Season Ends in Style With New Champions
The Franchise, Pen is Mightier, and Pi Kappa Phi won their respective
divisions in the volleyball finals last Thursday.
In the competitive division, The Franchise took both games over Arnold’s
FUPA, 25-23, 25-17. With only one loss in the women’s regular season, Pen is
Mightier stormed over No. 1-seeded Free Ballers 25-11, 25-13, to advance to
the championship game against Delta Delta Delta.
With ease, Pen is Mightier took home the title-winning 25-17, 25-19. In the
co-ed division, there was no champion this year due to an ineligible player.
With the same records going into the final game, Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Tau
Omega faced off in the recreational championships. In the only championships
to go to a third game, Pi Kappa Phi defeated Alpha Tau Omega 19-25, 25-19,
18-16.
'GET
AT US' MAKES HISTORY!
The
streak is over. "Get at Us" knocked off the UCF Men's Basketball Coaches,
becoming the first student team in four years to defeat Coach Speraw's team.
Jonathan Wilson lead the way for "Get at Us", as they prevailed 30-25 in a
see-saw game full of action.
PI
PHI WINS WOMEN'S DODGEBALL, MEN'S 'ELITE 8' SET
Congratulations to Pi Beta Phi for winning the first ever women's dodgeball
title, as they swept Alpha Delta Pi 3-0 in the finals. The men's tournament
will resume on February 20th, with the final 8 teams gunning for the most
coveted title in Intramural sports.
BADMINTON DOUBLES WINNERS
Adeel Bhutta and Yaser Sheikh defeated Huibin
Li and Jin Liang 15-7, 15-7 on Saturday to win the first ever Badminton
Doubles title. The pair outlasted 15 other teams and did not lose a game en
route to the victory.
NU WIFFLEBALL CHAMPS!
Sigma Nu got on board for their first ever UCF Intramural
Championship this past Saturday, after winning a marathon 7 hour tournament
at the Recreation and Wellness Center. 11 teams fought for the glory, and
Sigma Nu emerged victorious after beating Ballz Out twice, 16-10 and 15-14,
to take the title.
UCF SHINES AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
UCF's 'Golden Knights' pose with their national runner-up
trophy. Julie Hartley (yellow shirt) was named tournament MVP.
LSU and Oklahoma weren't
the only teams playing for a national championship over the break in New
Orleans. The UCF Co-Rec Flag Football team finished second in the nation at
the ACIC Flag Football championships, just falling short against UConn in
the finals. UCF started the tournament with wins over UConn and Western
Kentucky, then stormed through the playoffs with wins over Arizona State,
Nebraska, and St. Peters College.
The run ended with a
16-6 defeat in the title game in the rematch against UConn. UCF came home
with some hardware though, as Julie Hartley was named the female tournament
MVP and Aya Funahashi, Kim Freed, and James Panui were named First Team
All-Americans!
UCF also fared well with
the officials who were represented. Intramural Supervisor Steve Anderson
became UCF's first two-time All-American official and Graduate Assistant Sam
Mayhew was also named All-American. Sam was the line judge for the Men's
Collegiate National Championship game. Chris Morello, Michael Boman, and
Camille Jackson also officiated at the tournament among the 72 officials who
were invited nation-wide. The top 20 officials each year are named
All-American, and UCF has had 5 in the last 3 years.

SUPERVISORS BEAT REFS TO WRAP UP SEMESTER
The refs aren't blind, but they sure aren't seeing
straight after the intramural supervisors roared back from a 6 point
halftime deficit to defeat the intramural basketball officials 48-43 in the
annual grudge match. "Supervisor-in-Training" Vladimir Voyard-Todal flashed
the skills that made him a star at Apopka in scoring 25 points to lead the
field. Ray "Bling Bling" Acosta lead the refs with 20, including several
clutch second half shots. It wasn't enough, as "Smooth" Sam Mayhew played
tough defense in the win, which he will have to get used to as he is getting
married this weekend. Good luck to Sam and congratulations to the
supervisors. Have a great break everyone and don't forget to get your
dodgeball and 3 on 3 basketball teams together!
BASEBALL FINALS
Defending
Competitive League Champion, The Bandits, squared off against the undefeated
KBC in the Competitive League baseball finals last Thursday night. KBC’s
Sergio Figueroa, former Bandit himself, dominated his former teammates going
3 for 3, with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs. The Bandits fell to KBC for the second time
this season, 8-0.
In the Recreational
League Championship, Old School and Ortheon both attempted to win their
first title. Both teams came out strong, each scoring 1 run in the first
inning, making it a tie game for 4 innings. Old School then rallied in the
top of the 5th scoring 3 runs while holding Ortheon to grab their
first title in a 4-1 win.
LAST MAN STANDING
Michael Eyermann outlasted 62 other brave souls to win the
first Dodgeball Eliminator tournament. All 62 participants played in 5
preliminary games with random opponents, attempting to stay alive as long as
possible. Half of the field was eliminated based on the scoring system
(which was too complicated to explain in this article). Eyermann was able to
stay alive until the very end, winning the coveted t-shirt. Congrats to all.
HOOP DREAMS FULFILLED
FCA, BUS DRIVERS WIN TITLES;
ADP COMPLETES THREE-PEAT
What a
night! Things got started off in the Men's Recreational Final as FCA rolled
Sig Ep II 63-31. Things got closer in the Women's final as Alpha Delta Pi
stayed unbeaten for the third straight year as they defeated Sistas with
game 31-15. Finally, the Men's Competitive final was a thriller as the Bus

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE...
NEW NAMES, SAME RESULTS IN COMP AND WOMEN'S FINAL; PIKE IS NEW CHAMP
IN REC
Does this sound
familiar? Matt Malloy throws for a TD and Phil Berk returns a punt 70 yards
en route to a 19-14 Light em Up win over the Show Stoppers. Or how about Kim
Freed tossing two touchdowns to different receivers as Chix Squad beats
ADP
12-7. Both quarterbacks lead new teams to their 3rd consecutive intramural
flag football championship. Brian Fischer had two touchdowns for Pike to
lead them over Campus Crusade 22-12.
LOPEZ WINS TRIVIA, AGAIN
It turns out Eric Lopez is the brains of the operation.
After teaming up with Victor Anderson to win consecutive team trivia
championships, Eric Lopez outlasted his former partner in the final of the
Individual Sports Trivia contest. 27 contestants began the night in the
hunt, but Lopez and Anderson buzzed in correctly all night to reach the
final. Eric beat Victor 20-5 in the final match to win the crown.
UWF REGIONAL RESULTS
UCF Co-rec champion Dix-n-Chix took their show on the road and
finished 5th in the 2003 UWF Pensacola Regional Flag Football tournament.
UCF's team finished 3-0 in the pool play with wins over Northwestern State,
Georgia Southern, and Clayton State. Northwestern State rallied in the
elimination game to beat Dix-n-Chix, ending their tournament run. Wide
Receiver Aya Funahashi was named to the first team all-tournament squad.
Intramural Graduate Assistant Sam Mayhew also had some success, as he
officiated the Co-rec championship game and was named all-tournament. Sam
received a bid to officiate at the ACIC National Flag Football Tournament in
New Orleans. Sam will be the 5th official from UCF to work at the national
tournament, joining Camille Jackson, Michael Boman, Steve Anderson, and
Chris Morello. Doug Marcello, Phil Masi, and Camille Jackson also officiated
semi-final games in Pensacola.
SWAMP BOWL RESULTS
Light Em Up finished an impressive 3-1 at the 2003 University of Florida
Swamp Bowl Flag Football Tournament. Light Em Up defeated three teams from
UF before falling in a 26-20 thriller to the Crew from Valdosta State
University. Congratulations also go to UCF Officials Jason Human, Camille
Jackson, and Michael Boman who each worked one of the Championship games.
Jackson and Boman will now go on to officiate at the National Flag Football
Tournament in New Orleans, Louisiana.
'4 OF A KIND' WINS IM SPORTS FEST
2003
Kim Freed, Christina Fernandez, Justin Junod, and William
McComb combined as a fearsome foursome, as their '4 of a Kind' trumped the
rest of the field on Friday, October 18th during IM Sports Fest 2003. '4 of
a Kind' placed well in the Dizzybat Dodgeball, Canoe Relay, Tug of War,
Melonball, Knightroball, and Pajama Relay events, giving them enough points
for the overall title. Each team member won $50 checks courtesy of the UCF
Federal Credit Union.
REYNOLDS, FRIEDLANDER WIN PPK
Austin Reynolds and Jenna Friedlander were the 2003 Men's
and Women's Punt, Pass, and Kick Champions. Reynolds didnt win a single
individual event, but after a recount had 4 more yards than CJ Townsend to
take the victory. Townsend was the high man in the Kick competition, with a
55 yard boot. Brandon Noel had the strongest arm of the night, going for 54
yards. Brandon Cron won the punt title with a 55 yard bomb. Jenna
Friedlander won the women's title with 68 overall yards.
'GET AT US' TO TAKE ON COACHES
Get at Us defeated Captain Boot in the finals of
the Kirk Speraw 3 on 3 Challenge to advance to play the UCF men's basketball
